Pull levers; ring bells; see our model railway with Thomas and Friends; ride-on railway immediately outside our site. Brand new for 2024: see and operate our huge London North Western Signal - only erected in the last few weeks after restoration.
Light refreshments available. Visit our Museum downstairs in the Signal Box, and see demonstrations upstairs of how the Signalman moved trains in his section of track.
Also see real trains shooting by at 100mph.

This free parent & toddler group runs 9am-12pm every week in their large function room - so there's plenty of space for prams, pushchairs & little ones to left off some steam in a safe space. They also have great coffee & cake! We will be there from 930am to provide you with the opportunity to perhaps make a gift for a special family member, a keepsake for yourself or let your little one get creative (avoiding the mess at home). We have items from £7-35 each and they take 10-14 days to be ready.

Climb the 93 steps of the spiral stone staircase to the top of the only medieval town belfry in England and enjoy the magnificent views of the Cathedral, the historic city of St Albans and the beauty of the surrounding countryside.
Stop off in to the clock room to see the working Victorian turret clock mechanism, with its 7ft pendulum and step in to the belfry and admire the medieval bell, Gabriel, which is still rung every hour on the hour. But don't stand too close when it is chiming as it is really loud!

For young families we have plenty of interactive exhibits to occupy and inspire the young ones including have-a-go radio controlled boats, have-a-go model railways, scalextric/slot-car racing, drive your own yellow train down a school corridor, steer a 1/6 scale radio controlled Tiger tank, steam engine rides radio controlled Tamiya trucks and free sticker maps. It is a brilliant, low cost day out for a family that doesn't include screens!

Back by popular demand after the huge success of the first event held in 2024!
Carols on the Common is a ncommunity event for residents all ages to come and sing carols and Christmas songs together on Christmas Eve. It is free, short and sweet, and takes place early in the evening so that everyone can join in.
Carol singing will be led by talented local musician Tim Sutton and his band and you can expect to sing Christmas favourites from Hark the Herald Angels Sing to White Christmas.
Carols on the Common is supported by the Harpenden Trust, and there will be an opportunity to donate to the Harpenden Trust Christmas Appeal.
